The name Punjab was given by later Islamic invaders and it is also spelled and romanized as Panjāb and this word is a compound of the two Persian words Panj (five) and āb (waters). Panjab practically means “The land of five rivers”- The Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab, and Jehlum.

The oldest name of Punjab is Sapta Sindhu (The land of seven rivers) and the seven rivers were: the Vitsta and Vitamasa (Jhelum), Asikni (Chenab), Parusni and Iravati (Ravi), Vipasa (Beas), and the Satudri (Sutlej). These seven rivers mentioned in the Rig-Veda.
